PRAVĪRA I   A king of the Pūru dynasty. His father was Santurodha. He had two brothers named Duṣyanta and Sumanta. [Chapter 278, Agni Purāṇa] .
PRAVĪRA II   A son of Pūru, a king of the Pūru dynasty His mother was Pauṣṭī. He had two brothers named Īśvara and Raudrāśva. Pravīra got of his wife Śūrasenī a son named Manasyu. He was known by the name Janamejaya also. After conducting three aśvamedhas, Pravīra accepted Vānaprastha (third stage of life). [Śloka 11, Chapter 95, Ādi Parva] .
PRAVĪRA IV   A caṇḍāla (the lowest and most despised of all classes of people). In order to keep his word of honour Hariścandra allowed himself to be sold to this caṇḍāla Pravīra. He was none other than Lord Śiva himself. (See under Hariścandra).
PRAVĪRA(S) III   A special class of Kṣatriyas. King Vṛṣadhvaja was born in this class. [Śloka 16, Chapter 74, Udyoga Parva] .

प्रवीर n.  काशीनगर का एक चाण्डाल, जिसने राज हरिश्चन्द्र को खरीदा था । इसे वीरबाहु नामातर भी प्राप्त है ।
प्रवीर II. n.  (सो. पूरु.) एक पूरुवंशीय राजा, जो भागवत, विष्णु तथा भविष्य के अनुसार, प्राचिन्वत् राजा का पुत्र था । किन्तु महाभारत में इसे पूरु राजा पुत्र माना गया है । इसके दो भाइयों का नाम ईश्वर एवं रौद्राश्व था । पूरु राजा का ज्येष्ठ पुत्र जनमेजय किसी कारण राज्य के लिये अयोग्य साबित हुआ, जिससे उसे हटाकर प्रवीर को राजगद्दी पर बिठाया गया । पश्चात् इसीसे पूरुवंश आगे चला । इसी कारण महाभारत में इसे ‘वंशकृत’ (वंश को आगे चलानेवाला) कहा गया है [म.आ.९०.४] । महाभारत में इसकी पत्नी का नाम शूरसेनी (श्येनी) एवं पुत्र का नाम मनस्यु (नमस्यु) बताया गया है [म.आ.८९.४] । इसने तीन अश्वमेध यज्ञ एवं एक विश्वजित् यज्ञ किये थे । उन यज्ञों को संपन्न करने के उपरांत इसने वानप्रस्थ आश्रम ग्रहण किया [म.आ.९०.११] ।
प्रवीर III. n.  (सो.नील.) एक राजा, जो विष्णु के अनुसार हर्यश्व राजा का पुत्र था । इसे जवीनर नामांतर भी प्राप्त है (नवीनर देखिये) ।
प्रवीर IV. n.  माहिष्मती के नीलध्वज राजा का पुत्र ।
प्रवीर V. n.  पांडय देश का एक राजा, जिसे मलयध्वज एवं चित्रवाहन नामांतर प्राप्त है । इसकी कन्या का नाम चित्रांगदा था, जिससे इसने ‘पुत्रिकाधर्म’ के शर्त पर अर्जुन को प्रदान किया था । भारतीय युद्ध में अश्वत्थामा के साथ युद्ध करते समय यह मारा गया [म.क.१५.४२] ।
प्रवीर VI. n.  एक क्षत्रिय-क्कुल, जिसमें अजबिंदु नामक कुलांगार राजा उत्पन्न हुआ था [म.उ,७२.१४] ।
