वि  m.  1. m. ( nom. वि॑स् or वे॑स् acc. वि॑म् gen. abl. वे॑स्; pl. nom. acc. व॑यस् [acc. वीन्, [Bhaṭṭ.]]; वि॑भिस्, वि॑भ्यस्, वीना॑म्) a bird (also applied to horses, arrows, and the मरुत्s), [RV.]; [VS.]; [PañcavBr,] (also occurring in later language).
वि   [ cf. 1. व॑यस्; Gk. οἰωνός for ὀϝιωνος; Lat. a-vis; accord. to some Germ. Ei; Angl.Sax. aég; Eng. egg.]
वि  n.  2. n. an artificial word said to be = अन्न, [ŚBr.]
वि  n.  3. ind. ( prob. for an original द्वि, meaning ‘in two parts’; and opp. to सम् q.v.) apart, asunder, in different directions, to and fro, about, away, away from, off, without, [RV.] &c. &c. In, [RV.] it appears also as a prep. with acc. denoting ‘through’ or ‘between’ (with ellipse of the verb, e.g. i, 181, 5; x, 86, 20 &c.) It is esp. used as a prefix to verbs or nouns and other parts of speech derived from verbs, to express ‘division’, ‘distinction’, ‘distribution’, ‘arrangement’, ‘order’, ‘opposition’, or ‘deliberation’ ( cf. वि-√ भिद्, -शिष्, -धा, -रुध्, -चर्, with their nominal derivatives)
क्री   sometimes it gives a meaning opposite to the idea contained in the simple root ( e.g. √ , ‘to buy’; वि-√ क्री, ‘to sell’), or it intensifies that idea ( e.g. √ हिंस्, ‘to injure’; वि-√ हिंस्, ‘to injure severely’). The above 3. वि॑ may also be used in forming compounds not immediately referable to verbs, in which cases it may express ‘difference’ ( cf. 1. वि-लक्षण), ‘change’ or ‘variety’ ( cf. वि-चित्र), ‘intensity’ ( cf. वि-कराल), ‘manifoldness’ ( cf. वि-विध), ‘contrariety’ ( cf. वि-लोम), ‘deviation from right’ ( cf. वि-शील), ‘negation’ or ‘privation’ ( cf. वि-कच्छ, being often used like 3. अ, निर्, and निस् [qq. vv.], and like the Lat. dis, se, and the English a, dis, in, un &c.)
वि-जामि   in some cases it does not seem to modify the meaning of the simple word at all ( cf., वि-जामातृ)

As a prefix to verbs and nouns it expresses: (a) separation, disjunction (apart, asunder, away, off &c.), as वियुज्, विहृ, विचल् &c.; (b) the reverse of an action; as क्री 'to buy'; विक्री, 'to sell'; स्मृ 'to remember'; विस्मृ 'to forget'; (c) division; as विभज्, विभाग; (d) distinction; as विशिष्, विशेष, विविच्, विवेक; (e) discrimination; व्यवच्छेद (f) order, arrangement; as विधा, विरच्; (g) opposition; as विरुध्, विरोध; (h) privation; as विनी, विनयन; (i) deliberation, as विचर्, विचार; (j) intensity; विध्वंस.
As a prefix to nouns or adjectives not immediately connected with roots, वि expresses (a) negation or privation, in which case it is used much in the same way as अ or निर्,i. e. it forms Bah. comp.; विधवा, व्यसुः &c.; (b) intensity, greatness; as विकराल; (c) variety, as विचित्र; (d) difference; as विलक्षण; (e) manifoldness, as विविध; (f) contrariety, opposition, as विलोम; (g) change, as विकार; (h) impropriety, as विजन्मन्.

5. A horse. Ind. A particle and prefix, implying:--1. Certain- ty, ascertainment, as विवेक्तुं to determine, to judge.
2. Separation, disjunction, as वियोक्तुं to disjoin.
3. Aversion, repugnance, as विरोद्धुं to oppose.
4. Impatience, intolerance, as विमृष्टुं to be impatient.
5. Variety, difference, विशेष्टुं to distinguish.
6. Cause, motive, विधातुं to prescribe or order.
7. Motion, progress, विचरितुं to go.
