हन्त  n.  ind. an exclamation or inceptive particle (expressive of an exhortation to do anything or asking attention, and often translatable by ‘come on!’ ‘here!’ ‘look!’ ‘see!’ in later language also expressive of grief, joy, pity, haste, benediction &c. and translatable by ‘alas!’ ‘ah!’ ‘oh!’ &c.; often repeated or joined with other particles e.g. हा हन्त, हन्त हन्त, हन्त तर्हि), [RV.]; &c.

हन्त [hanta]   ind. A particle implying
   Joy, surprise, flurry (oh !); हन्त भो लब्धं मया स्वास्थ्यम् [Ś.4;] हन्त प्रवृत्तं संगीतकम् [M.1.]
   Compassion, pity; पुत्रक हन्त ते धानाकाः [G. M.]
   Grief (oh !, alas !); हन्त धिङ् मामधन्यम् [U.1.] 42;
-स्मरामि हन्त स्मरामि   U.1; काचमूल्येन विकीतो हन्त चिन्तामणिर्मया [Śānti.1.12;] [Me.16.]
   Good luck or benediction.
   It is often used as an inceptive particle (expressive of an exhortation to do any thing, or asking attention); हन्तास्मिञ्जन्मनि भवान्न मां द्रष्टुमिहार्हति [Bhāg. 1.6.22;] [Bṛi. Up.2.4.1;] हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि Rām. -Comp.
-उक्तिः  f. f. uttering the word 'alas !', tenderness, compassion.
   कारः the exclamation 'hanta'.
   an offering to be presented to a guest; निवीती हन्तकारेण मनुष्यांस्तर्पयेदथ.
