DEVALA I   A famous muni, the son of Pratyūṣa, one of the aṣṭavasus. [Ādi Parva, Chapter 66, Verse 26] . Devala muni is a character in the well-known story of Gajendramokṣa. (For details see Indradyumna).
DEVALA II   A muni, a very erudite scholar in the Vedas. He was the elder brother of Dhaumya maharṣi, and was present at the sarpa-satra (serpent yajña) of King Janamejaya. Once Śrī Kṛṣṇa on his way from Dvārakā to Hastināpura met Devala. After the great war was over he visited Yudhiṣṭhira. Devala had a daughter called Suvarcalā. In the svayaṁvara ceremony he held for his daughter to which sons of munis were invited she chose Śvetaketu as her husband. [Śānti Parva, Southern Text, Chapter 22] . Devala had two very intelligent and forebearing sons. [Viṣṇu Purāṇa, Part 1, Chapter 15] .
DEVALA III   A disciple of Vyāsa. Asita, Devala, Vai- śampāyana, Sumantu and Jaimini were some of the disciples of Vyāsa. (M.B. Prathama Skandha). Brahmavaivarta Purāṇa contains the following story about Devala. Devala was the son born to Asitamuni as the result of a boon granted by Śiva. Raṁbhā, the heavenly dancer fell in love with him. But, Devala did not reciprocrate her love. So, she cursed him to become crooked in body. When he became crooked thus he came to be called Aṣṭāvakra. For six thousand years he did penance after which Kṛṣṇa and Rādhā appeared to him. Rādhā laughed at the uncouth form of Aṣṭāvakra. But, Kṛṣṇa admonished her and embraced him. At once his bodily crookedness disappeared and he became very handsome. A vimāna then descended from heaven, and Rādhā, Kṛṣṇa and muni together disappeared in it. Ekaparṇā, daughter of Himavān was this Devala's wife. [Harivaṁśa, Chapter 18] .

देवल n.  एक ऋषि [क.सं.२२.११] । असित को एकपर्णा से उत्पन्न पुत्रों में से यह एक था । यह कश्यप गोत्र का एक मंत्रकार एवं प्रवर था । इसने हूहू गंधर्व को शाप दिया था [भा.८.४] । असित देवल तथा देवल इन दोनों नामों से इसका निर्देश प्राप्त है । इसका छोटा भाई धौम्य । वह पांडवों का पुरोहित था (असित देखिये) ।
देवल n.  एक स्मृतिकार के नाते भी देवल सुविख्यात था । याज्ञवल्क्य पर लिखी गई ‘मिताक्षरा’ [मिता. १.२८] , ‘अपरार्क, ‘स्मृतिचन्द्रिका’ आदि ग्रंथों में देवल का उल्लेख किया गया है । उसी प्रकार देवल की स्मृति के काफी उद्धरण ‘मिताक्षरा’ में लिये गये हैं [मिता.१.१२०] । ‘स्मृतिचन्द्रिका’ में देवल स्मृति से ब्रह्मचारी के कर्तव्य, ४८ वर्षो तक पाला जानेवाला, ब्रह्मचर्य, पत्नी के कर्तव्य आदि के संबंध मे उद्धरण लिये गये हैं [स्मृ.५२,६३] । उसी प्रकार ‘मिताक्षरा,’ हरदत्त कृत ‘विररण, ‘अपरार्क आदि ग्रंथों में ‘देवस्मृति’ में से आचार, व्यवहार, श्राद्ध, प्रायश्चित तथा अन्यु बातों के संबंध में उद्धरण लिय गये हैं । ‘देवल स्मृति’ नामक ९० श्लोकों का ग्रंथ आनंदाश्रम में छपा है । उस ग्रंथ में केवल प्रायश्चित्तविधि बताया गया है । किंतु वह ग्रंथ मूल स्वरुप में अन्य स्मृतियों से लिये गये श्लोकों का संग्रह होगा । इसका रचनाकाल भी काफी अर्वाचीन होगा । क्योंकि, इस स्मृति के १७-२२ श्लोक तथा ३०-३१ श्लोक विष्णु के हैं, ऐसा अपरार्क में [अपरार्क.३.१२००] बताया गया है । अपरार्क तथा स्मृतिचन्द्रिका में ‘देव स्मृति’ से दायविभाग, स्त्रीधन पर रहनेवाली स्त्री की सत्ता आदि के बारे में उद्धरण लिये गये हैं । इससे प्रतीत होता है कि, स्मृतिकार देवल, बृहस्पति, कात्यायन आदि स्मृतिकारों का समकालीन होगा । देवल विरचित धर्मशास्त्र पर श्लोक एकत्रित कर, तीनसौ श्लोकों का संग्रह ‘धर्मप्रदीप’ में दिया गया हैं । उससे इसके मूल स्मृति की विविधता तथा विस्तार की पूर्ण कल्पना आती है ।
देवल II. n.  जनमेजय के सर्पसत्र का एक सदस्य [म.आ.४६.७] ।
देवल III. n.  प्रत्यूष का पुत्र [म.आ.६०.२२५] ; [विष्णु.१.१५.१७] । इसका भाई असित । स्वर्ग में जा कर, इसने पितरों को महाभारत का निरुपण किया था [म.आ.१.६४] ; अजित देखिये ।
देवल IV. n.  एक शिवशिष्य । शिव ने श्वेत नाम से दो अवतार लिये । उनमें से दूसरे का शिष्य ।
देवल V. n.  कृशाश्व को धिषणा से उत्पन्न पुत्र [भा.६.६.२०] ।
देवल VI. n.  एक ऋषि । ब्रह्मदेव के पुष्कर क्षेत्र के यज्ञ में, ब्रह्मगणों का यह अग्नीध् था [पद्म. सृ.३४] ।
